Sawyer followed the footsteps of brothers Rager and Tasker into sprint cars. After crewing on their cars for several years, he competed for the first time in 2013 at the age of 15, placing 11th in the final 305 point standings. In 2014, he moved up to the 360 class, finishing 17th in the point standings in his rookie season. He recorded his first top ten point standing at Knoxville in 2015. He climbed one more spot in 2016, finishing ninth in the final standings and recording one top five and eight top tens.
In 2017, Sawyer put his stamp as a top contender in the 360 class, winning his first three feature events, and garnering five top fives and eight top ten finishes on his way to a career-best sixth place standing in points. In 2018, four podium finishes netted him a career-best fourth in points and 360 "Lyle Boyd Hard-charger Award" for passing the most cars in feature events.
2019 and 2020 saw the move up to 410 racing. In 2019, he came home 13th, before recording his first top five finish in 2020, and an 11th place standing. Sawyer had his best season to date in the 410 in 2021, grabbing two podium finishes, nine top tens and a sixth place point standing.
